Linocut Christmas card design 2017

Medieval marginalia

This years Christmas cards are featuring an image inspired by medieval marginalia – a type of visual margin-doodles found in illuminated manuscripts, which are often humorous, absurd or even grotesque. Especially the rabbit holds a place of pride in these handmade books of yesteryear, where they are often up to no good. In fact they are more often than not depicted taunting and battling other animals, as well as capturing and torturing humans. This little critter however is all about the Christmas cheer, as he’s parading a Christmas tree on his galant steed. Or is he? I for one would not trust a medieval bunny bearing gifts.

The design was carved in lino and handprinted in two colours using archival quality oil-based inks, and printed on 300 gsm paper stock. The envelope is featuring a matching bunny-motive.
