Linocut – Harpy

I really love birds, and I really love strong women, so I guess it was only a matter of time before I made the move from Crow Ladies to a full on Harpy!

Harpies are mythological creatures, powerful and fierce, and like a lot of other strong female figures history has given them a bad rep. Created as half bird and half woman, the harpies started out as fair and swift wind spirits, but the notion quickly transformed into ugly and vile demons, taunting and haunting and starving their victims. Whether hideous and malicious or not, the image of the harpy remained that of a powerful being, and as such an image of a powerful woman. She might not be pretty. She might not be nice. But oh, can she fly!

This “Harpy” was carved by hand in lino, inked by hand using black Caligo Safwe-wash, and handpulled on an etching press on exquisite 300 gsm Cream coloured Somerset Satin paper. As a result each print is an unique and original artwork, and is signed and numbered by the artist. The paper measures approx. 28 x 38 cm, and the printed area 15 x 18 cm.

This print is available in a limited edition in my shop and on Etsy.
