Linocut – “Under the Sea”
Growing up, “The little Mermaid” by H.C.Andersen was my favorite fairytale, despite it’s incredible sadness and even barbaric moments. As a grown up I find it much harder to stomach. So this little mermaid, although it has some visual hints of darkness, is a lot more cheerful than the one from the Danish tale.
The style of “Under the sea” is inspired by art nouveau and Jugend, as well as inkwork and classical picture books. It is carved in lino, and printed on soft textured Awagami Japanese paper, in prussian blue Caligo ink. The printed part measures approx. 20×15 cm, and the paper approx. 27×20 .
